AAF Tank Museum - Danville, VA (37 miles)
1/3 million square feet of space containing armored vehicles, artillery, uniforms, small arms, two SAM missiles, a cobra helicopter and lots of equipment from WW1 onward. Open Saturdays and Fridays during the summer and Saturday only during the winter. Hours are 10am-4pm. No food.

North Carolina Aviation Museum - Asheboro, NC (41 miles)
Home of over 10 flying aircraft from 1941-1967. All indoors and open seven day a week. We also have a gift shop with all type of aviation gifts including the best prices on Cooper jackets and Chase-Durer watches. The museum is on the field and is right next to the parking. The NCAM features this famous Flitfire, flown by Orville Wright in 1943, an S-56 Savoia Marchetti open-cockpit seaplane like the one flown by Smith Reynolds on his 6,000-mile, solo flight from London to Hong Kong in 1931-32, many historical, wartime, experimental, unmanned aircraft and much more! - Submitted by Peter Darragh

BBQ in Lexington - Lexington, NC (58 miles)
Fun cross country to visit any of the dozen BBQ places around Lexington. Friendly airport, no parking fees, courtesy cars available. They do ask that you throw a couple bucks worth of gas in the car while out, small favor to ask for use of the airport I think and was happy to fill it up for them. I highly recommend Backcountry BBQ. 5 minutes from the field and some of the best BBQ I have ever had. Loaded up and flew some back to RDU as well.
