Westgate's River Ranch
Westgate's River Ranch is truly a resort fly-in experience, which has evolved into the largest dude ranch East of the Mississippi, lies on 1,700 beautiful acres and is surrounded on all sides by approximately 400,000 acres of state and federally protected wetlands. In addition to Florida cowboy-themed accommodations, Westgate River Ranch boasts a multitude of recreational activities, including horseback riding, swimming, golf, petting farm, nature hikes, trap and skeet shooting, hayrides, cookouts and a full-service marina complete with boating, fishing, and airboat and swamp buggy rides. Westgate River Ranch also features a 5,000-foot paved and lighted runway, award-winning Smokehouse Grill, River Ranch Saloon and the longest-running Saturday night championship rodeo in the United States that offers trick riding, bull riding, calf roping and barrel racing at the 1,200-seat rodeo arena. 9/23/2015 - I flew into 2RR on 9/22 every thing was closed including the FBO and a rest room. A fellow showed up to see my RV-8. I asked what's up he said they're not open every day. - Submitted by Bob Lund
12/20/2014 - Flew there last weekend with another pilot, a first visit for both of us. The staff was very friendly and they gave us a ride in the golf cart from the airstrip to the main lodge where we could rent a golf cart for a few hours for about $11. It's well worth getting one if available if you're planning on cruising around the ranch it's fairly spread out. There are plenty of activities to enjoy some free and some for a fee. After hearing about our trip, my wife and I flew back down the next weekend and spent the afternoon. It's their off season so it wasn't crowded and was very relaxing. The airport is easy to get in and out of and there are no parking fees. There's only a handful of tie-downs, but a staff member told us that they've accommodated over 100 planes before during a fly-in. We were also told that they do have pilot-controlled runway lights for night operations. This airstrip makes for a nice day trip. - Submitted by Justin
3/16/2009 - Went there to explore this past weeked 3/14/09. Very nice people. Picked us up on the golf cart and gave us a nice tour of the property. Stayed for lunch. Found there is a lot to do with the kids, such as golf, boating, etc. It is certainly a bit rustic, but that's what you go there for. Nice airstrip, but parking is limited. Call ahead to make sure there are no large fly-ins planned.
1/30/2007 - like to fly there for an "outback" or "old Florida" experience. Services are limited, but the people are friendly, the food is cheap, you can rent a golf cart to drive the grounds from the landing strip. I just wish I could find a cabin/trailer/room there for rent for a night or two (without the hassle of sitting through one of those time share presentations - if you have one, contact me at Mario@TopFLA.com). It is a good idea to call them and see when what is going on as certain "attractions" do are not open all the time - but then again, I go there because it is so unbelivably quiet and rural out there.
