Darrington Municipal 1S2 might be the most scenery-per-mile destination in the Cascades. The approach alone earns the trip: you thread up the Sauk River valley with Whitehorse Mountain towering 6,800 feet straight off your wingtip, the glaciers of Glacier Peak wilderness rising beyond, and old-growth forest running right up to the edge of the strip. On a clear morning, with the river winding silver below and the peaks lit up, it's the kind of flight you land from grinning.

Then you shut down and the place keeps delivering. The field sits at the foot of the mountains, a ten-minute walk from a genuine North Cascades timber town - and everything's close together once you're in: restaurants, coffee, a brewery, a grocery store, and a couple of classic small-town bars, all within easy walking distance. No rental car needed just walk. The backyard is the real draw. The Wild Scenic Sauk River runs cold and clear for fishing and paddling. The Mountain Loop Highway, the Old Sauk Trail, Boulder River, and the Whitehorse rail-trail put world-class hiking and biking right at the threshold. And the town runs a summer calendar that belies its size - the Darrington Bluegrass Festival its 50th anniversary in 2027, the Timberbowl Rodeo, and a string of mountain music festivals, all a short walk from where you'll tie down. A few honest notes for planning: the field is day-VFR with no fuel and no services, so top off before you come and bring your own tie-downs. The runway 10/28, 2,491 ft is paved and in good shape expect some turbulence landing to the west on warm afternoons, with terrain on the east approach. This is a small mountain strip with an enormous backyard - and a town working hard to bring its airport back to life. Fly in while it's still a secret. - Submitted by Tyller Boomgaarden |
