Middle Island is a privately owned island off Alpena, Michigan on the northeast shore. You will stay in what was once the still active lighthouse's signal building which can sleep eight. There is no electricity on the island so appliances run on gas as do the lights. You can spend many hours exploring the island's hiking trails while trying to spot some of the deer that will share your island. Build a roaring bonfire on the beach at night and you will see Great Lake freighters passing close enough to hear the rumble of their huge engines. You will be amazed at how many more stars there are when they don't have to compete with city lights! So, if you are interested in Great Lakes maritime history, lighthouses, or just a secluded get-a-way, this might be your destination. See the web site http://www.middleislandkeeperslodge.com/ for more information and be sure to tell Captain Mike you'll need a ride from the airport. - Submitted by George Crackel
