Darrington Old-Fashioned 4th of July - Fly-In to 1S2 Darrington Municipal Airport (1S2) Darrington, WA |
| Fly into Darrington Municipal 1S2 for one of the most authentic small-town Fourth of July celebrations in the Cascades. This is timber country doing Independence Day the old-fashioned way - and arriving by air means a gorgeous run up the Sauk River valley under Whitehorse Mountain instead of a scramble for parking. The parade rolls through town at midday, and it's pure Darrington: heavy equipment and log trucks straight from the Hampton Lumber yard, classic cars, horses, and more, passing right by the Red Top Tavern and River Time Brewery - both good spots to post up and watch it roll by. There's a community fair with games and food during the day, and after dark the Darrington Fire Department caps it all off with fireworks. The best part for a fly-in: once you're in town, everything is within easy walking distance - the parade route, the Red Top and River Time, the fair, restaurants, coffee, and a grocery store are all right there, so you can park the plane and spend the whole day on foot. A few practical notes for pilots. The field is day-VFR with no fuel and no services - top off before you come and bring your own tie-downs. It's a bit of a stretch from the runway to the edge of town, so plan a folding bike or a ride if you'd rather not walk that first leg. And if you're staying for the fireworks, plan to overnight - the field isn't set up for departures after dark. The Darrington Motor Inn is in town, or there's camping in the area. Bring a camp chair, sunscreen for the day, and a layer for the cool mountain evening. Heavy equipment, fireworks, a mountain back, and a runway instead of a parking lot - come do the Fourth right in timber country. |
