Materials Handling Supervisor - Centennial, Colorado

Description:

Responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the USAP Cargo facility at McMurdo Station. Directs cargo receipt, distribution, and shipping, including hazardous materials and science samples. Collaborates with stakeholders to ensure smooth logistical support for research activities in Antarctica. Manages a team of approximately 7-8 personnel.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements cargo movement plans in coordination with Transportation and Logistics, ensuring readiness for upcoming seasons. Reviews Operational Notices, Support Information Packages, and contributes to the development of Research Support Plans and proposal reviews.
  • Participates in User Committee Meetings, Planning Conferences, and Science Planning meetings to provide logistical input and support.
  • Administers the hazardous cargo program, including personnel training, documentation, and compliance with Air Force Material Command and Department of Transportation regulations. Assumes Quality Control responsibilities in the absence of the Hazardous Materials Supervisor.
  • Provides budgeting support for the ATO Manager.
  • Maintains and updates USAP Packing and Shipping Instructions, Shipping Retrograde procedures, and other departmental documents.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding cargo transportation regulations and procedures of the USAP cargo system.
  • Briefs grantees on cargo procedures, expectations, retrograde processes, and sample handling at science meetings.
  • Supervises packing, documentation, and cargo shipment, including temperature-sensitive science samples and retrograde cargo via air or vessel. Assists grantees and USAP agencies in cargo processing.
  • Coordinates processing of re-supply and operation-related cargo for the South Pole and field camps.
  • Supervising personnel at the cargo facility ensures proper support for grantees research projects.
  • Establishes cargo movement priorities for all northbound flights and submits weekly reports to the ATO Manager.
  • Provides statistical information and graphic analysis for End of Season reports.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations and procedures for special handling cargo.
  • Tracks cargo movement throughout the USAP transportation system and coordinates tracer actions.
  • Collaborates with grantees to prioritize cargo for deployment into the field.
  • Generates retrograde advisories and is the point of contact for science sample retrograde.
  • Implements and maintains workplace safety programs and ensures compliance with Environmental, Health, Safety, and Waste Management policies.
  • Manages stock levels of consumable materials and spare parts necessary for operation in Antarctica.
  • Communicates effectively with subordinates, conducting staff meetings and performance appraisals and ensuring adherence to quality standards and safety practices.
  • Capable of lifting heavy loads and working 12-hour shifts during resupply vessel operations.
  • Handles confidential matters in accordance with management policies.
  • Interacts professionally with the National Science Foundation, military, and other agency officials.
  • Performs other duties as required to support operations effectively.

                                                                                                                

Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; an additional four (4) years’ of relevant experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree. 
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in freight movement, including hazardous material transportation via air, ship, and surface modes.
  • Minimum of two (2) additional years’ experience working in a supervisory role is required, preferably in a logistics or transportation-related field.

Expected Skills and Competencies:

  • Previous training in the Certification of Hazardous Material for multi-modal shipment is required.
  • Familiarity with Maximo, aircraft, vessel cargo manifesting, and proficiency in MS Office applications.

Preferred:

  • Highly desirable to have an understanding of remote sites or polar logistics, including experience in similar environments.
  • Preferred one year of experience certifying USAP Hazardous Cargo, demonstrating proficiency in handling hazardous materials in compliance with regulations. Working knowledge of US Air Force Hazardous Material Shipping regulations AFMAN 24-604 preferred.

Physical and/or Other Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods
  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica
  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF
  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.
  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold
  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts safety objectives.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

  • Amentum allows 10 days of flexible holidays per fiscal year to be pro-rated based off which quarter employment begins.
  • Biweekly pay periods.

Pay Range target of $72,000.00 to $80,000.00 annualized
